Transportation | Inter Pipeline
In total, we operate seven pipeline systems that gather petroleum products from producing sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan for delivery to market hubs primarily at Hardisty and Edmonton, Alberta.
Long-haul pipelines include the Cold Lake, Corridor and Polaris systems, with transportation services provided to shippers pursuant to long-term cost-of-service contracts that have a defined annual capital fee and recovery of substantially all operating costs. Conventional oil pipelines include the Bow River, Central Alberta and Mid-Saskatchewan systems (Facilities Infrastructure operates the Boreal Pipeline system). Transportation services are generally provided under cost-of-service and fee-based contracts. Midstream marketing activities are completed by the marketing segment for fixed service fees.
In addition, Inter Pipeline operates bulk liquid storage facilities in Denmark and Sweden, branded as Inter Terminals Nordics, which includes approximately 19 million barrels of storage capacity across eight facilities. This business provides build bulk, break bulk and custom blending services for oil, chemical and biofuel products through a combination of cost-of-service and fee-based arrangements.
Pipeline Systems
Long-Haul Pipelines
Consisting of the Cold Lake, Corridor and Polaris pipeline systems, long-haul has over 3,300 km of pipeline and 3.8 million barrels of storage.
The Cold Lake pipeline system is the largest transporter of Cold Lake area bitumen production. It provides pipeline transportation service for the founding shippers; FCCL Partnership, Canadian Natural Resources and Imperial Oil and also provides product transportation service for Strathcona and Cenovus Energy. The producers’ heavy bitumen is blended with diluent, which is transported by Inter Pipeline from the Strathcona region to the Cold Lake area. This blended product is then shipped by the Cold Lake pipeline system to major crude oil terminalling hubs in Edmonton and Hardisty, Alberta.
The Corridor pipeline system provides bitumen transportation services for the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Owned by Canadian Natural Resources, Chevron Canada and Shell Canada Energy, AOSP is a major mining and bitumen upgrading project in the Alberta oil sands.
The Corridor system links the AOSP production site and the oil processing and marketing hub near Edmonton, Alberta.
The Polaris pipeline system is a diluent pipeline system that transports diluent from the Edmonton area to the Athabasca and Cold Lake areas of Alberta and is one of the major diluent transportation systems in Alberta.
Conventional Oil Pipelines
Our conventional oil pipelines include the Bow River, Central Alberta and Mid-Saskatchewan pipeline systems, which combined they span approximately 3,900 kilometres.
The Bow River pipeline system is a crude oil gathering and transmission pipeline system which gathers oil from established producing fields in southeastern Alberta and transports it to Hardisty, Alberta, as well as Milk River, Alberta. It also transports crude oil from facilities at Hardisty, Alberta to Milk River, Alberta as part of a separate transmission system.
The Central Alberta pipeline system is a light sour and light sweet crude oil gathering pipeline system which gathers oil from established producing fields in south central Alberta and transports it to the Enbridge pipeline system, Kinder Morgan North 40 facilities and the Trans Mountain pipeline at Edmonton.
The Mid-Saskatchewan pipeline system is a crude oil gathering system which gathers oil from established oil fields near Kindersley and Kerrobert, Saskatchewan and transports it to the Enbridge pipeline system at Kerrobert.
