Adventure Travel Market Hits $1.16 Trillion Globally

Adventure Travel Market Hits .16 Trillion Globally

The global adventure travel market has reached an estimated value of $1.16 trillion, according to updated data from the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

The revision follows the release of the UN Tourism World Tourism Barometer, which reported record international tourism receipts of $1.73 trillion in 2024, up 11% from the previous year and 14% above pre-pandemic levels. By applying its 67% market share figure, ATTA recalculated the sector’s worth from $966 billion in 2023 to $1.16 trillion in 2024.

The findings underscore the rapid growth of adventure travel from a once niche sector into a central driver of global tourism. The ATTA study, developed with EF Adventures and CBI and based on surveys of 5,000 travelers in 13 countries, identifies shifting traveler motivations, with demand increasingly focused on authentic cultural, nature-based, and sustainable experiences. ATTA said the market’s expansion reflects a broad movement toward “Open to Adventure” travel, with 67% of all international travelers now falling into this category.

Global Growth and Market Impact

Adventure travel has undergone a transformation over the past decade. No longer limited to adrenaline-focused activities, the sector now attracts a wider audience seeking meaningful and immersive connections with local culture, natural landscapes, and community traditions. ATTA noted that while hiking, biking, and kayaking remain popular, experiences such as authentic cuisine, local traditions, and cultural exchange have moved into the mainstream.

The definition of the adventure traveler has broadened. Motivation is no longer tiedto a single activity like cycling or birdwatching. Instead, many travelers incorporate anadventure element into broader itineraries focused on culture, leisure, and personaltransformation.

New small and mid-sized operators are stepping up tomeet demand. Globally, the core adventure-first traveler base has risen from 30% to41%, and 67% of all international travelers are considered “Open to Adventure.” Thismarks a global movement toward authentic, human-centered travel.

According to the report, these travelers average 11 days per trip, spending $265 per person per night, or about $3,000 per trip. This combination of extended stays and strong per-night spending highlights their economic significance to destinations and operators.

Four Distinct Traveler Segments

The ATTA research divides adventure travelers into four overlapping segments: Adventure Intensives (14%), Nature Enthusiasts (12%), Cultural Explorers (27%), and Experience Samplers (14%). Together, these groups account for 40% of global outbound international travelers, forming the core of the adventure travel market.

Adventure Intensives are motivated by physically immersive activities and personal growth, while Nature Enthusiasts prioritize wildlife and natural landscapes. Cultural Explorers focus on culinary and heritage experiences, and Experience Samplers combine multiple styles of travel, blending culture, activity, and exploration. ATTA emphasized that many travelers move fluidly across categories depending on destination, companions, and life stage.

Sustainability and Supply-Side Expansion

Sustainability has become a defining feature of the sector. The report highlights a preference for small-scale, locally owned, and capped-group activities that emphasize human connection and conservation. Community-led initiatives and small operators have flourished alongside larger providers, supported by online platforms such as GetYourGuide, TourRadar, Evaneos, and Airbnb Experiences, which have amplified the reach of adventure offerings worldwide.

“By investing in authentic, locally rooted, and sustainable experiences, the industry has the opportunity to secure relevance, strengthen communities, and position adventure as a defining force in the future of travel,” the report stated. ATTA said this shift enables tourism to deliver long-term economic and social benefits while reducing negative impacts on destinations.

Implications for Destinations and Operators

The report outlines strategies for destinations and tour operators seeking to capture the growing market. Recommendations include promoting longer-stay itineraries, layering cultural and nature-based experiences, and tailoring marketing to specific traveler types. For destinations, the report urges emphasis on local stories, traditions, and cuisine to engage travelers. For operators, it highlights the value of building sustainable credentials, partnering with local communities, and offering tiered products that appeal to both high-energy adventurers and culture-focused travelers.

ATTA’s study also points to the expanding middle class and luxury segment as driving forces behind growth. Increasingly, travelers define luxury not only by comfort but also by access to exclusive, meaningful, and transformative experiences. The rise of bespoke cultural and adventure itineraries reflects this evolution.

Regional and Global Research Scope

The market sizing research was conducted in Q1 2025, supported by EF Adventures and with European data collected by Acorn Tourism Consulting for CBI. Surveys were completed in 13 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America, ensuring representation from major source markets including the United States, China, India, Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The comprehensive approach provides insight into how traveler behavior and preferences vary across regions, while underscoring a global shift toward adventure and experiential travel. ATTA emphasized that the $1.16 trillion valuation confirms adventure travel’s role as a powerful driver of growth within the tourism economy and a core component of international visitor spending.

The release of the UN Tourism data has provided the first full-year global receipts figure for 2024, allowing the industry to measure the scale of the adventure travel segment with greater accuracy. ATTA’s recalculation signals that adventure tourism is not only expanding but also consolidating its place as one of the most influential forces shaping the future of global travel.
